A Canadian permanent resident is somebody who has immigrated to Canada and has been authorized to live and work in Canada on a permanent basis. A permanent resident has many great rights and privileges such as free access to public education and the right to freely enter and exit Canada, but not as many as a Canadian citizen. For example, only a Canadian citizen has the right to vote or run for political office. However, a permanent resident who has lived in Canada for three years is eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
